Into the Deep - Original A4 Artwork

Into the Deep is inspired by my lifelong fascination with the ocean and, in particular, the quiet mystery and beauty of whales. There is something about these incredible creatures that has always captivated me... their size, their grace and the sense of another world that exists beneath the surface. My fascination even follows me into everyday life, I occasionally fall asleep listening to the gentle, haunting sounds of whales.

For this painting, I wanted the whale to be the clear heart of the artwork. I deliberately left a generous area of untouched paper around it, allowing the whale to feel as though it is suspended within the vastness of the ocean. The open space gives the painting a sense of calm and allows the viewer to focus on the whale itself, while also suggesting the immense, quiet world that surrounds it.

Alongside the more delicate watercolour painting of the whale, I have incorporated some of my usual abstract elements. Rich blues, turquoise and textured marks suggest moving, bubbling water and breaking waves, while the warm golden-brown shape at the top adds an unexpected contrast and a sense of visual balance. A take on what it might feel like to have warm sun rays bursting through the surface. Bold lines, splashes, bubbles and organic shapes bring movement and energy to the otherwise peaceful composition.
